| Does anyone know if any of the Type 1 headlight switches will cross over to a 73 Squareback? This semester I am teaching all night classes, so I get out at 10:00pm. A couple of days ago, I went out to my square, and the headlights wouldn't come one (parking lights did though). One of the subjects I teach is electronics, so I went back into the lab area and grabbed a multimeter, and cut a few wires, and I planned on jumping the headlights at the fuse panel. However, when I went back to the car, the headlights worked. So now I am carrying the multimeter and the jumper wires just in case. However, I also have a boatload of Type 1 switches. Has anyone found one that will cross over? | |

| Look at the pin out numbers. The functions between types 1, 3 and 4 are largely the same. The type 4 for instance....can use type 3 and type 1 switches...so that tella you a little something there....but the snout length on type 1 and 3 are shorter. I have some bits and pieces and pin outs here: Check your wiring diagram numbers and look at the part # on the switch. And count the number of pins....and how many you actually use. Look here: http://www2.cip1.com/searchresults.asp?cat=1742 There are two main switches that CIP1 has listed. The first.... 311 941-531-B has 6 pins and says it fits beetle and ghia 68-70 and type 3 68-70. The second 113-941-531 E says it fits std beetle, 71-77 super 71-72, ghia 71-74 and type 3 71-74. | |

| Be aware that starting in about '71, the Type 3 used the added "X" terminal on the ignition switch to send power to the headlights ONLY when the ignition switch is on. The idea was to not drain your battery so fast if you left them on. So your headlight fault might not be your headlight switch, but wiring or ignition switch instead. I don't know when Bugs went to this arrangement... probably the same year. | |

| What is the function of the X terminal wire which is black with a yellow stripe. I know it is added to shut lights off when ignition is turned off ,but how does it do this. No matter what position i have ignition or the headlight switch this wire is never hot. Also if i leave it off the switch and not connected everything still function fine. Richie | |

Of course I know how a headlight switch works, that wasn't my question. I was looking for a quick answer, because right now I am swamped. MC, do you know the main difference between the Type 3 forum, and the Type 1, where you usually hangout is? Over here we try to help one another, and not be condescending. Yours is the first such reply that I have seen on this forum in a long, long time. | |||

The X terminal is supposed to be energized when the ignition switch is in the RUN position. With the key removed it will have no power. The X wire at the steering column/ignition switch connector goes to the X terminal on the headlight switch. Here is the Samba wiring diagram. Note, however, that it shows the X wire to be red/black. On my '71, as with yours, it is black/yellow. I think this is an error in VW's '71 diagram. It doesn't show the multi-pin connector in the diagram, either. I believe beetles went to it in 73 as well. I know my 76 Bug had that feature.
